Today was picture day at Emerald, where everyone came in with smiling faces and special outfits. The crew from Lifetouch took pictures of all the kids in grades Pre-K through 5th. Student ID cards were instantly made and already delivered to the classrooms. A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Schoenow and Mrs. Maline for volunteering their time to make this operation run very smooth. This is just another example how grateful we are to have wonderful volunteers helping out in the building.
Picture retakes will be on October 18. Today I stopped into the 1st grade classrooms while they were working on creating mental pictures by grouping units by 5 and adding extras. Children will benefit greatly by learning to "see" numbers without counting every unit. Below you will see students working on their math stairs and grouping numbers.
Kindergarten students practiced identifying their letters while singing the the "Coconut Tree". What a great way to tie in music and letter identification! Go to www.fws.gov/refuge/seney/yo.html to register and learn more about this fun outdoor opportunity! Emerald Elementary School School Pictures

To recap the week:
Have a Great Weekend!...and don't forget, Pictures on Tuesday, Sept 13. Forms will go home on Monday. Thank you to the following organizations:
Today, Emerald Elementary students and staff practiced a lock down drill. The past two days of drills are required by the State of Michigan to ensure our safety procedures are in place and everyone understands what to do and where to go. It is good practice. We will have others throughout the school year. Below are some photos from today. The photos include 3rd grade math stations and the lovely FENCE ART created by the 2nd grade class. Students in art class practiced weaving.
Be sure to visit manistiqueschools.org website to check on the lunch menu and also the bulletin to read important announcements. During day 2 at Emerald we practiced two safety drill procedures (fire drill and tornado drill). The students did a great job listening and following directions.
I stopped in to the 4th grade classrooms and watched the students work on math lessons with the Math Expressions resources and materials. It was great to see students work on their "Math Talk" (See previous posts) to demonstrate how they solved a problem. Below are some photos of students working in their math workbook, utilizing the whiteboards and discussing math problems as a class. Great Job Team! What a great first day of school! We started off with an all school assembly in the gymnasium to highlight our School Pledge and the meaning behind our compass rose (N=Need to Be Safe, S=Show Responsibility, E=Expect Respect & W=Work Together. Check out Mrs. Boddy's twitter account @BoddyMaryann to see some of the highlights. Below are some photos of the events that occurred throughout the day. ENJOY!
Playground access just became safer and cleaner. Yesterday, cement was poured to eliminate the mud pit between the sidewalk and basketball court. Now students have a larger traffic area to go to and from the playground.
