Fall weather is fast approaching, be sure to check the weather every evening and before school with your child to make sure they wear appropriate hats, coats, gloves and boots to school.
School drop-off in the morning between 7:55 am & 8:20 am. The doors unlock for students to enter at 7:55 am. I stopped in the 5th grade classrooms throughout the day to discover they were working on their 7 Habits of the Leader in Me activity guide. The 5th grader's are responsible for our October 7 (Friday) school-wide assembly. Next month's topic will be on how to be a Proactive Student Leader. In math class, the 5th graders were working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and while in technology class, they were working on writing a story on their blog page and learning how to comment back and forth on each other's stories.
Take time to ask your children every evening during family dinner what their "three bests" were at school. This is a technique I use at home with my children. It requires children to give more thought in their answers and increases dialogue between families. By using this technique, I never hear the typical responses of: "it was good", "nothing" or "I don't know". Last week I observed just a few of the performing arts happening at Emerald. There is a neat art display hanging in our front lobby, the after school drama club is getting ready for their big performance of "The Granny Awards" and I noticed a few lady helpers in the art room. The ladies in the art room were busy painting mirrors that will be soon on display as part of our "Leader in Me" program. I can't wait! Thank you to all our volunteers who help promote our performing arts at school! Below are a few photos.
Students at Emerald celebrated Constitution Day today by wearing red, white & blue (see some photos below). Many classes watched and sang along with the oldie, but goody, School House Rock video among other discussions on how the Constitution applies to us still to this day.
When students went home this afternoon, the teachers stayed back to conduct addition al training on the new Math Expressions curriculum. We took part in a webinar to learn more about the website and teacher resource features. Teacher's were provided 3 important tips to lessons:
Today, the teaching staff rotated throughout the day for a three hour training with Shirley Poulton on strategies to teach the traits of effective writing. While the teachers were learning some great strategies to teach the children about writing skills, the students took part in one hour training sessions on the student handbook and on how to be a Proactive Student Leader at school and home. Grades 3-5 spent time in the cafeteria reviewing the handbook and we also discussed what it takes to be a Proactive Student Leader. Grades K-2 practiced being a Proactive Student Leader by being safe, responsible, respectful and cooperative on the playground, in the cafeteria and on the bus. Below are some photos of the teachers taking part of the Writing Training and students taking part in the Proactive Training. Students worked hard practicing on becoming a Proactive Student Leader on the playground by waiting their turn, helping others out, and using the equipment properly. Great Job Everyone!
1/2 Day:
Wednesday, Sept. 21 will be a 1/2 day for Emerald Students. Student lunches will be adjusted to accommodate the change in time. School will be dismissed at 11:55 am for pick-up/walkers, and students bused home will leave at 12:00 pm. Teachers will be busy at school learning about the new math curriculum (Math Expressions) during an in-service. Please make adjustments to your schedule in relationship to school dismissing at 11:55 am. Constitution Day: Since September 17 (Constitution Day) landed on a weekend. Emerald Elementary will celebrate it this Wednesday (Sept. 21). Students can dress in red, white and blue clothing to school. Classrooms will take part in Constitution activities throughout the day as well. The Emerald Elementary fourth grade class recently (9/16/19) participated in the Adopt a Beach clean up by monitoring the Lake Michigan Beach area. More than just a beach sweep, “Adopt-a-Beach” teams conduct litter removal and monitoring and complete a beach health assessment that includes science-based observation and testing. The teams collect information and enter it into an online system, where it is used to educate the public, share with local beach authorities and improve beaches. This is the fifth year the elementary has participated in the program.
Thank You to the Ladies Who Lunch for a Cause in Manistique for donating money towards items to be purchased in the classrooms. This is truly a nice surprise.
Limestone Federal Credit Union also dropped off school supplies to be distributed to students and classrooms who need them. Thank you to LFCU and our Hometown ShopKo for working together in regards to the donated items. Dear Families: Today or tomorrow your child will be bringing home a form with all of the information we have in regards to addresses, phone numbers, emails, employer’s and emergency contact information. Please review the sheet to make sure it is up to date. If items on the list are not accurate, please cross it out and replace it with the accurate information. Please fill in any blank as well. Once you have made the proper additions or changes, please sign it and turn it back in to your child’s teacher. If everything is up to date, please write OK, sign it and return it back to the teacher. Dear Families:
Listed are a few notes and reminders for the upcoming school year.
