Manistique Area Kiwanis paid a visit to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms to announce the winners of the "Back Our Blue" poster contest. Students received "merchant dollars" and a special breakfast at Big Boy with our local law enforcement. The students had the treat of arriving to school in style!
Dear Kindergarten and Second Grade Parents:
It has been a wonderful and busy year with our Kindergarten and Second grade students. It is nice to see everyone’s smiling faces in the morning. I would like to share some great news with you. Starting in January, Emerald Elementary will have a new teacher to teach a third section of Language Arts and Mathematics every day in Kindergarten and a third section for Second grade Language Arts every day. The new teacher is Madison Macek whose Welcome Letter is attached. Kindergarten students will still report to Mrs. Richey and Ms. LaMuth in the morning and then some of the students will go to Ms. Macek’s class after specials. Kindergarten students are currently used to moving between rooms to work on math and Language Arts stations. By adding the third teacher we are able to accommodate smaller classrooms and more space during Language Arts and math instruction. Kindergarten students will end the day, after the second recess, back in Mrs. Richey’s and Ms. LaMuth’s class to pack up and go home. Ms. Macek will start her day with Second grade students for Language Arts. The second graders will still report to Ms. Kozlowski and Mrs. Sherbinow in the morning and then, after Morning Meetings, a group of second graders will travel to Ms. Macek’s class to work on Language Arts every day. This too will offer more support for our second graders with an additional teacher and more space to work. This is a terrific opportunity to reduce class numbers and direct the proper attention to students in Kindergarten and Second grade classrooms. Aides and/or Tutors will continue to be a part of the daily classroom operations throughout the school year. At Emerald Elementary, we would like to thank you for your continued support! If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call. Sincerely, Erik E. Mason Principal Winners were chosen from our Fitness Calendar Tickets and the winners of brand new bike hlemets are....
**Remember, if you would like to be able to receive tickets you need to be actively participating in your fitness calendar, we have some really nice goodies as prizes! ** Go to ashleeeisinger.weebly.com to see the programs taking place in Physical Education Class. The latest lessons were on bowling. There is a great infomational recaps in addition to photos of your children having FUN! Emerald Elementary will begin an automated call system for students who have not been called in with an Excused Absence. If you do not excuse your child from school a call will go to you stating that your child is absent from school and it is Unexcused.
Regularly attending school is vital to the success of a child's education. Students who miss and abundant amount of school days runs the risk of becoming an adult who misses an abundance amount of work. Parents have been receiving letters home when thier child hits a certain amount of absences (Excused or Unexcused). A child should miss no more than 8 days of school in a school year, so make sure you you make appointments after school or during breaks. State Trooper Janisse is now our community officer who will assist with families who have children missing school over the alloted amount. When your child misses 20 school days or more, a letter is sent to the Juvenile Court System for Truancy. Meetings wil be held beforehand to set up for support or ideas to consistently have the child attend school with Trooper Janisse and the building Principal. While everyone is busy getting ready for family functions to host or travel to; now is a great time to cut out those Box Tops! Every child received a red Box Tops for Education sheet to paste on 50 Box Tops. Students can help by stick the cut outs on the sheet, fill out both sides (50 in all) and bring them back to school. If you have more than 50 at home, just include them in a zip-loc bag and send them in. We collect Box Tops all year long, but this Holiday Blitz competiion will run until January 20. The class that brings in the most box tops will earn a special treat!
The high school CTE class has been receiving heaps of clothes to support their mission in creating a Foster Care Closet for families in need. They created a competition between the classes at Emerald and the tally is in the photo below. Families can still bring in their last load of clothing to Emerald on Monday, Dec. 19. The CTE class is also looking for tubs to help sort and store the clothing.
Winter Weather RULES
Students wearing boots may play on the play structure and field. Students wearing their shoes they wear inside will be required to stay on the basketball court. Boots are defined as outerwear items placed on their feet that are not worn in school during the school day. Almost all of the children have gym shoes to wear during the day in school. Parents please remind your child to keep a pair of shoes at school. Snow pants: When snow is on the ground students will need to wear snow pants to play on the play structures and field. If a student does not have snow pants, they are to remain on the basketball court. Snow Plow Snow Pile: during the course of winter there will be a large snow hill on the basketball court. At no time are students allowed on the hill. Recess will be outside every day UNLESS the wind chill is 0 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. The temperature will be based on The Weather Channel app from the phone of the aides on duty. When checking the Weather Channel on your computer make sure the website is "refreshed" to include the most up to date temp. Please have students bring shoes to wear inside the building during the school day and for gym. Many students are just wearing winter boots to school and then have them on all day. This is uncomfortable for students when trying to learn in addition to tracking wet snow into the classrooms. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. The challenge for this activity was to design the tallest tower for the elf to sit on using only the materials provided.
Over 90 students from grades 2 - 12 took part in the Glee Performance on Saturday, December 10. Glee is a great way to for students to perform and enjoy the performing arts at Manistique Area Schools. Below are a few of the Emerald Explorers performing their Disney themed songs.
On Monday, December 12 the Manistique Are Schools band performed their Christmas Concert to the community. Below is a photo of the 5th/6th grade band performing thier songs. The concert finally included all of the band memebrs on stage and in the crowd performing we "We Wish You A Merry Christmas". What a room filled with talented musicians! It's a joy every year to listen to the Kindergarten and First graders sing and perform their little hearts out. Manistique Area Schools, in my travels and experience, has the best performing arts students and staff! Great job Ms. Eisinger and Mrs. Ryan for putting together the wonderful performance and and thank you to all of the teachers and staff who helped out during the evening performance.
